How to create a doughnut bun

This fancy top-knot has been spotted on celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Lauren Conrad and Gwen Stefani. It is a popular look that can take you from day to night. Our Styling Director, Dario will show you how to re-create this look at home through this easy tutorial. You can also scroll down for more detailed instructions.

How-To Steps:

1. Brush your hair with a paddle brush- it makes the hair smoother. Take all your hair up in your hands, very gently to protect your tresses. Use a simple elastic band- any colour is fine, you won’t be able to see it by the end. Pull all the hair together at the top of your crown and wrap the elastic band around it.

2. Take the doughnut, and pull your ponytail through the doughnut. Brush the ponytail forward toward the face, allowing you to cover the doughnut entirely. Smooth hair gently over your head.

3. Using a tail comb, brush hair around the back of head, making sure the doughnut is completely covered. Take hair underneath the doughnut, and secure to head with bobby pins matching your hair colour. Don’t be too precise, the looser the better and fuller it will look.

4. Using Aveda Air Control smooth hair backwards with hands, and spray. Air Control will hold the hair in place, but won’t look too shiny or stiff. If the look is too polished for your liking, you can pulls bits of hair from the bun for a softer look. Take the shorter hairs at the nape of your neck and secure with hairspray.
